About the Company

Our client is a global private port terminal operator providing specialised port terminal services, logistics support, warehousing, and landside operational solutions. With operations across Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, and Durban, the organisation plays a critical role in facilitating efficient supply chain, cargo handling, and logistics infrastructure.

They are seeking a Legal Advisor to join their Legal Department. The successful candidate will provide legal advisory services, contract management, compliance monitoring, and dispute coordination across the organisation while working closely with the Legal & Risk Manager.

This role may be based in either Cape Town or Durban.

Key Responsibilities

Legal Advisory & Compliance

  • Provide legal advisory support to internal departments on operational and commercial matters.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legislation including the Companies Act, Labour Relations Act (LRA), Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Employment Equity Act (EEA), Consumer Protection Act (CPA), National Road Traffic Act, POPIA, PPPFA Act, and B-BBEE Act.
  • Monitor regulatory and legislative changes impacting logistics, transport, warehousing, and supply chain sectors.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare legal opinions, reports, and summaries.
  • Assist with the development of internal legal policies, SOPs, governance frameworks, and compliance procedures.

Contract Management

  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements including:
    • Transport and logistics agreements
    • Warehousing and storage contracts
    • Freight forwarding agreements
    • Service level agreements (SLAs)
    • Supplier and vendor contracts
    • Subcontractor agreements
    • Employment and executive agreements
    • Confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements
  • Maintain and manage the contract register and contract lifecycle processes.
  • Monitor contract compliance, renewals, variations, and risk exposure.

Transnet Contract Support

  • Ensure compliance with Transnet contractual obligations, governance requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Provide legal support relating to contract variations, disputes, performance obligations, and risk mitigation.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders, auditors, and external legal advisors on Transnet-related matters.

Labour & Employment Law

  • Support HR with disciplinary processes, grievance procedures, and consultations.
  • Prepare documentation for CCMA and Bargaining Council matters.
  • Liaise with external attorneys on labour disputes where necessary.

Litigation & Dispute Management

  • Assist with the management of legal disputes, claims, and litigation matters.
  • Draft legal correspondence, notices, and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate with external counsel and track litigation progress.
  • Maintain litigation registers and legal cost records.

Risk, Claims & Governance

  • Assist with insurance claims, risk incidents, and legal claims administration.
  • Maintain risk and claims registers and liaise with insurers and brokers.
  • Support compliance monitoring, audits, and regulatory reporting.
  • Provide company secretarial support, including:
    • Board packs and board resolutions
    • CIPC filings
    • Maintenance of statutory records.

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Admitted Attorney
  • LLB Degree

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years post-qualification legal experience (law firm or in-house).
  • Experience in:
    • Commercial contract drafting
    • Legal compliance and governance
    • Labour and employment law
    • Legal administration and dispute coordination
  • Exposure to logistics, transport, warehousing, supply chain, or operational environments advantageous.
  • Exposure to corporate structures, M&A transactions, or group legal governance beneficial.
